Romeo and Julien

A Leytonstone school challenged homophobic bullying with a reworking of Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers.

Intended to combat the growing use of terms such as “gay” and “batty boy” as insults, Romeo and Julien starred two male actors, who fall in love but come from rival gangs.

It was staged at the Cochrane Theatre, in Holborn, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival and the 30-minute abridgement of Shakespeare’s original text focused mainly on the relationship between the two boys.
