Uncovering Hidden Histories: LGBT+ History Month Talk & Tour 2026

Join us for a very special journey through the Charterhouse by candlelight, created and led by a group of residents. For centuries, the Charterhouse was a predominantly male community. From the creation of the charity in 1611, it served as a unique sanctuary for men in their later years, many of whom were gay men seeking a haven when they had no family to care for them. This special LGBT+ History Month programme aims to shine a light on these hidden stories. You will hear about the historic figures who shaped this institution, from the flamboyant George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, to the post-war architects Seely & Paget, and the distinguished artist Robert Medley. Discover how the Charterhouse provided a vital community, and often a place of safety, for gay men throughout history.
