LGBTQ+ History Tour of Central London (Pay what you think its worth)

London’s LGBTQ+ history is not a footnote. It is a story of courage, secrecy, celebration, loss, and survival written into the streets themselves. Our Free LGBTQ+ History Walking Tour of London tells these stories where they happened, giving voice to generations who lived boldly in the shadows and fought for the freedoms many enjoy today.

Beginning at the Clermont Hotel, Charing Cross, next to Trafalgar Square, this guided walking tour explores how attitudes toward gender and sexuality have shifted dramatically over time. We start in Roman London, where ideas of sexuality were fluid and familiar, before moving into darker chapters shaped by religious doctrine and harsh laws like the Buggery Act, which made queer lives criminal for centuries.

As we walk, you’ll discover the hidden world of Molly Houses, early safe spaces for queer men that existed despite constant surveillance and persecution. We explore the life and trial of Oscar Wilde, a moment that shocked Victorian society and exposed the cruelty of Britain’s legal system.

The tour continues into the 20th century, examining the rise of LGBTQ+ activism, the origins of Pride marches, and Soho’s transformation into a refuge for queer communities. We discuss the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic, the crucial role of Soho’s sexual health clinics, and the activism that emerged from grief and anger.

We also confront modern history, including the Admiral Duncan bombing, an act of hate that became a rallying point for unity and resistance. Alongside these difficult stories, we celebrate queer culture including the growth of London’s drag scene and its global influence.

This 2-hour LGBTQ+ walking tour ends in Soho Square, surrounded by bars, venues, and streets that continue to shape queer life in London today. It’s an essential experience for anyone interested in queer history, social justice, human rights, and inclusive tourism.

Walk the streets of resistance, resilience, and pride. Book now and be part of London’s LGBTQ+ story.
