We are proud to be part of OUTing the Past: The National Festival of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History, which is coordinated by Schools OUT(UK).
50th anniversary logo2017 marks 50 years since the Sexual Offences Act of 1967 and this anniversary provides the theme for the fourth academic conference dedicated to examining LGBT history. The conference marks the end of LGBT History Month and will take place on Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th March 2017 at The Bluecoat, Liverpool.

diana-souhamiAn official launch for the conference will take place on Friday 3rd March at 6.00 PM in the Redmonds Lecture Theatre of the Liverpool John Moores University. The launch will include the 3rd Allan Horsfall Lecture, which is sponsored by the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in honour of its founder. The award-winning author and biographer Diana Souhami will deliver this year’s lecture, and her talk will focus on her work with women’s and lesbian history.
The Allan Horsfall Lecture is open to the public. Tickets are free but booking is essential. Please use the Registration & Tickets link provided above to book tickets.
Conference Programme
Presenters at this year’s conference will represent institutions from across the UK as well as Australia, Belgium, Finland, Israel, Norway, Sweden, and the US. The two-day programme will consider themes that include

  • Regulation and Recognition in the 20th Century
  • The Terminology of Sexual Regulation in the Pre-modern World
  • Materializing Legality: Archives, Heritage and Museums in LGBT History
  • LGBT Citizenship as Reflected in Cultural Responses and the Popular Press
  • Historicising LGBT Lives in the Armed Forces
  • Scientific Approaches and Discourses
  • Interrogating Sexuality and Gender in the Ancient to the Early-modern Periods
  • Exploring Sexuality, Gender and Identity through Material Culture
  • Literary Insights and Dramatic Interventions

The programme will also include panel discussions, forums, and workshops that highlight the conference’s ongoing commitment to exploring the subjects, perspectives, and methods that constitute LGBT history. See the conference website for a full programme and updates.
