Carlisle Celebrates Cumbria's LGBT History

CELEBRATE is the first project to explore and uncover the living history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans (LGBT) community in Cumbria. The exhibition documents past and present LGBT events in the county, and features the stories of prominent individuals in Cumbria’s LGBT community such as best-selling author Sir Hugh Walpole and artist Percy Kelly.
CELEBRATE reveals the experiences of people in Cumbria which are brought to life through audio recordings of conversations collected throughout the project. The exhibition showcases a series of images by photographer and visual artist Colin Tennant who has spent ten months with a group of LGBT people over fifty – documenting their everyday life and exploring issues around age, gender and sexuality in a rural region.
The exhibition is a result of a two-year Heritage Lottery Funded project in partnership with OutREACH Cumbria. It runs till the end of October and is joused in Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
OutREACH Cumbria runs the Celebrate project to highlight the lives and history of LGBT people in the county. It’s seeking local people to give their oral histories. The Celebrate website can be accessed by clicking here
