University Staff Need to Do More to Tackle Homophobia

A recent study says that incidents of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in our universities are not being reported and are going under the radar.
The study, published in the journal Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education recommends training staff in equalities and training them to recognise and encourage reporting of incidents that constitute bullying and hate crime.
The report followed a Youth Chances survey in 2014 that found 30% of LGBT students had experienced an incident but only 1 in 10 reported it, with 9 in 10 saying they didn’t think it was worth it.
The report, carried out with The University of Greenwich, makes it clear that university staff need awareness in challenging, encouraging reporting and dealing with incidents in universities.
