I was on a heritage walk at Manchester Pride 2012, when the tour guide mentioned a raid on an all male fancy dress party in September 1880. The idea that an organised subculture existed in Victorian Manchester to enable men to meet up, dress up and hook up was irresistible. I was hooked.
