Schools OUT UK patron Cyril Nri has been nominated for the BAFTA for best supporting actor for his role as Lance in Russell T. Davies’ 2015 series Cucumber.
Filmed in Manchester and shown on Channel 4, Cucumberwas seen as an unofficial sequel to Queer as Folk, following the lives of a group of gay and bisexual men in the city.
London-based Cyril Nri’s moving performance culminated in one of the most affecting pieces of TV in years, as the viewer watches Lance murdered in a hate crime by a man he works with.
Reactions to the horrific scene were trending on Twitter for over five hours after the show ended.
Commenting on his nomination Cyril said, ‘I hope this nomination is seen as recognition of how far LGBT rights have come but also of how far we still have to go.’
He added: ‘It is undoubtedly a tribute to the brilliant and moving writing of Russell T. Davies.’
