October 7th 2014
The Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF) are organising a tribute and celebration in honour of the 50th anniversary of the birth of the modern gay rights movement in Manchester through recognising the formation of  The North West Homosexual Law Reform Committee & later The Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
The LGF have worked with The Diocese of Manchester to unveil a special commemorative plaque at Church House on Deansgate to commemorate the very first meetings of NWHLRC/CHE on October 7th 1964. This will take place in the early afternoon and is also supported by Manchester City Council. The plaque unveiling will be followed by an afternoon tea in the presence of The Lord Mayor of Manchester at The Lord Mayors Parlour.
Later, on the evening of the 7th, The LGF’s annual Homo Heroes Awards ceremony will be held at a city centre hotel in Manchester.
The LGF’s Homo Heroes Awards, supported by Barclays, are now in their fourth year and provide an opportunity to celebrate those people that have made a difference to the lives of people in our communities. At the awards The LGF will be marking the 50th Anniversary of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality.
As there are very few surviving members of the original meetings from 1964 able to attend, The LGF would like to invite up to twenty-five members from CHE to attend the day’s festivities from midday until late on Tuesday 7th October. Of course members would not have to attend all the events, but it would be appropriate if there was some attendance from CHE at each event.
IN BRIEF

  • Mid-afternoon unveiling of the plaque at Church House.
  • Afternoon tea back at The Lord Mayors Parlour
