Kevin Rudd – if we believed every word of the Bible, we might as well have ‘fought for the confederacy in the US civil war.’

Thanks to Gay Star News:
Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has given a passionate speech on gay marriage, saying opposing it is similar to supporting slavery. A pastor and Christian radio announcer on ABC’s Q&A program challenged the religious leader of the Labor party on Monday night (2 September).
He was asked, as a Christian, why he did not follow the teaching of the Bible on marriage. Rudd said: ‘I concluded in my conscience, through an informed conscience, and a Christian conscience, it was the right thing to do. ‘Let me tell you why, I do not believe people when they are born choose their sexuality. They are gay if they are born gay. ‘They do not decide at a later stage in life to be one thing or another. It is how people are built. ‘And therefore, the idea this is somehow an abnormal condition is wrong.’
When the pastor was asked what his view on gay people was, he said he believed in the ‘word of Jesus’ and asked why Rudd did not believe in the Bible. ‘Well, mate, if I was going to have that view, the Bible also says slavery is a natural condition,’ Rudd retorted.
He said if we believed every word of the Bible, we might as well as ‘fought for the confederacy in the US civil war.’ Rudd added: ‘I mean, for goodness sake, the human condition and social conditions change. What is the central principle of the New Testament? It is one of universal love, loving your fellow man.’
