MP Endorses LGBT History Month

The Government has endorsed LGBT History Month 2013 and our decision to focus on STEM. The Minister for Women and Equalities, Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson, said:
“It’s important that workplaces strive to promote a working environment that motivates, supports and draws on the talents of all its employees – and LGBT History Month is an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution that LGB&T people make to all aspects of society.
“The science and technology sector makes a vital contribution to the economy and society of this country.  The focus on science, technology, engineering and maths for this year’s LGBT History Month rightly recognises the role played by LGB&T people in this field. Our research base misses out when we are not drawing scientists and engineers from as wide a talent pool as possible. This is why we have asked the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering to lead jointly a programme to tackle the long-standing issue of diversity in STEM.
“A more diverse and inclusive workforce helps organisations to communicate effectively and can adds to its success, by drawing on the talents of all its employees to make a positive impact.”
Previously LGBT History Month has been endorsed by the PM David Cameron, Deputy PM Nick Clegg and Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband. The Shadow leader of the House, Angela Eagle, is a patron of LGBT History Month.
