UK Suspends aid to Uganda

Britain has suspended all direct aid to the Ugandan government with immediate effect, the international development secretary, Justine Greening, announced on Friday.
Aid to the Ugandan prime minister’s office was frozen in August, following allegations of fraud, while an independent forensic audit was ordered. Greening has now suspended other bilateral aid, which is spent through Uganda‘s financial systems, known as direct financial aid.
Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni has a poor human rights record, particularly with regard to opposition politicians and is suspected of supplying arms to troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The aid issue is not thought to relate to the notorious anti-homosexuality proposals, which would include harsher penalties for same sex acts, make some homosexual behaviours a capital offence and criminalise parents who failed to denounce their gay and lesbian off-spring.
