Thanks to Danny Boyle the whole world – whether they liked it or not – saw two women snog on Friday the 27th of August, for the British opening ceremony featured a split-second image of the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss from the now-defunct Channel 4 soap Brookside.
The stunning show had something for everybody but was notable in that it was inclusive, with a deaf drummer and choir, a disabled dancer and ethnic diversity among its performers and themes. Many LGB pop musicians featured too and Chad turned their contestants into the stadium to the tones of The Pet Shop Boys’ West End Girls. Same sex relations are legal in Chad, as in most African countries that were not colonised by the British.
