LGBT-friendly working environments would help boost productivity, said an employment expert in China. Zhou Haibin, a project officer of the International Labor Organization, said that a recent research project conducted in 130 companies showed that staff mobility was reduced 7.7 percent and productivity increased 6.5 percent after the companies implemented anti-homophobia policies. “If LGBT, or lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender, employees feel more comfortable about their sexual orientation in the workplace, their overall performance will be better,” he said. According to the report, released by the Aibai Culture & Education Center – a Beijing-based gay rights organization – only 6.29 percent of gay people in China choose to be open about their sexuality in the workplace. About 53 percent of the interviewees have been verbally abused and 32.35 percent have witnessed or experienced physical attacks due to people’s sexual orientation at their workplaces, resulting in a lack of interest, inability to focus, low efficiency and even resignations, it said.
