Moonie's Leader Dies

The self-titled  Reverend Sun Myung Moon died on September 3rd 2012 aged 92. The founder of the Unification Church, who carried out mass weddings of opposite sex-partners who were complete strangers to one another until they were introduced as suitors, believed homosexuality to be an evil that went against God’s plan. Although the Church was founded in 1954, its position on same sex relationships was somewhat medieval. Moon himself lumped homosexuality together with murder, prostitution and drugs and believed they threatened the future of the western world. LGBT members of the church would have to remain celibate at the very least, but the expectation was that they would marry and procreate with an opposite sex partner. He once described homosexuality as the work of Satan. But he is best known for a speech prophesying the elimination of all lesbian and gay people during the Third Coming.
The Reverend has not spoken on record about transgender issues, but since the ethos of the church centres on natural procreation between opposite sex couples married within the Church it is unlikely that a post-operative trans man or woman would fit in with God’s plan. Elders of the church have described transgenderism as an evil force.
More about Moon’s thoughts on homosexuality can be found at the Religious Tolerance website. There is a blog for LGBT people in the Unifcation Church: LGBT Moonies
