Barnsley Museums

Experience Barnsley Museum tells the story of Barnsley by the people of Barnsley, “For the people, by the people” has been the unofficial motto since the museum opened in 2013. For this years LGBT+ History Month we have compiled a new blog which represents the LGBTQ+ community in Barnsley through donations to the museum. This has enabled us to explore lots of different stories such as Maurice Dobson who ran a shop with his partner Fred Halliday back in the 1950s at a time when homosexuality was still decriminalised in this country. Maurice gave his shop to the people of Barnsley to be turned into a museum. Maurice died in 1990 and in 2000 he got his wish when the Maurice Dobson Musuem and Heritage Centre opened in Darfield. This is just one of many fascinating stories explored in this blog https://barnsleymuseums.art.blog/2023/01/26/lgbtq-collections-at-experience-barnsley-museum/
