US relationship counsellor Shannon Bradley-Colleary reveals in an article in the Huffington Post how her Bible Belt grandmother had a reality check when one of her daughters came out as a lesbian way back in 1988.
Revealing her grandmother’s letter to her homophobic chaplain, in which she says ‘Denial was my middle name’, she shows how the family matriarch turned from homophobia to compassion and how that transition saved the family and possibly her daughter’s life. She also kept the faith and moved to a more accommodating church.
