The Fourth Choir needs your help to commission leading composers to write groundbreaking gender-neutral choral works.
The Fourth Choir is London’s new LGBT-friendly chamber choir. The choir was founded in 2013 by a group of LGBT singers wishing to sing classical and modern choral works to the highest possible standard. Led by Artistic Director Dominic Peckham, one of the UK’s finest young choral conductors, the choir’s ambition is to represent the LGBT community in London’s world-class classical music scene. The choir recently performed at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the day of the UK’s first same-sex marriages – celebrating a major day for global civil rights. Watch our video to hear Ed Rex’s haunting setting of the beautiful, medieval Arabic poem “This Marriage” which celebrates all marriages, irrespective of gender.
Why they need to commission LGBT-relevant music
Very little music today speaks explicitly about LGBT lives and relationships. In the classical choral world (as across most musical genres) it is rare to hear LGBT-relevant music. We want to change that. We want to commission new LGBT-relevant choral music from leading composers, and then to perform and record it to raise awareness of this issue.
The Fourth Choir is non-profit-making and has just been granted UK charitable status. To ensure that our campaign is taken seriously, we want to commission works from leading composers who can charge several thousand pounds for just one work. We would love to commission several works and reaching our target of £5,000 would enable us to do this. The LGBT community has achieved so much, but the classical music world is still an open frontier. Please donate to help us make the music world more diverse!
