KS1: English – ‘King & King & Family’

The differentiated objectives for this lesson were devised by using the 2011 NC attainment target 2 for English Reading (Eng2) at Key Stage 1 (see italics in Teaching and Learning Objectives).
The themes of family and travel are explored in this lesson based on children’s book ‘King & King & Family’ by Linda De Haan and Stern Nijland. This book is the sequel to 2002′s ‘King & King’ by the same authors. ‘This second instalment follows the newlywed kings on their honeymoon. The two explore a jungle, finding various animals that all have children; King Bertie expresses the wish that he and King Lee have a child of their own. When they return home, they find that a lonely orphan girl has stowed away in their suitcase. They adopt Daisy and raise her as a princess. There are some suggestions for further activities – including map drawing, suitcase packing, and postcard writing – which encourage learners to consider what they value most back home and how they would feel leaving it. All reference to the main loving relationship in the book being between two men is treated at all times as usual, though teachers should expect questions by children about gay relationships/parenting.
