Scotland: National LGBT Youth Awards 2013 Winners!

LGBT Youth Scotland celebrated the achievement of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people at Awards as part of their annual National Gathering event. 120 young people attended the ceremony with Awards being presented to young people, youth groups and organisations committed to improving services for LGBT young people.
Award winners included David Corr, a young person from Glasgow who took an active role in the ‘Don’t Closet Mental Health’ campaign about mental health and LGBT young people.  Susannah McWhirter received the South Ayrshire award for her work in combatting homophobia in schools after experiencing homophobic bullying herself.  In national prizes, Nancy Russell won ‘Young Activist of the Year’ in recognition of their involvement in the Equal Marriage campaign.  Other winners included Parents Enquiry Scotland, a helpline for the parents and families of LGBT people.  ‘Youth Group of the Year’ went to Allsorts, an LGBT youth group for young people aged 13 to 25 in Dundee.
The LGBT Inspiration Award was presented to the LGBT 2012 Olympic and Paralympic athletes.  Claire Harvey, ParalympicsGB sitting volleyball player, accepted the Award through a recorded message on behalf of the athletes.  Claire said ‘It means a lot to us to know that we are doing what we are doing but hopefully we are inspiring you, the young people, to live your dream and fulfill your potential’.
Fergus McMillan, Chief Executive of LGBT Youth Scotland said “The achievement of these young people is truly inspirational.  I would like to congratulate all of the worthy award winners and say thank you to our sponsors and partners for supporting our work.”
Gary Lamont, of BBC Scotland’s “River City” hosted the Awards.  Last year Gary won the LGBT Inspiration Award, voted by young people.  Lucy Spraggan and Karen Dunbar both provided video messages in support of LGBT young people, shown on the night.  Awards were sponsored by a wide range of partner organisations with the West of Scotland LGBT Forum sponsoring the overall event.
