Bessie Smith was once the highest paid blues singer in America. Not bad for a southern black bisexual blues singer who had to stand her ground in a world dominated by white men. It is thought that Smith began forming her own act around a hundred years ago, at Atlanta’s “81” Theater. The year 2014 is the 120th anniversary of Bessie Smith’e birth. LGBT History month will be focusing on music in the same year.
