This project addresses challenges for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) policy and practice of issues surrounding sexual diversity raised by the new legal climate created by the 2010 Equality Act. At a NATECLA (National Association of Teachers of English and Community Languages) Conference hosted by the British Council in 2012, practitioners articulated concerns about engaging with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) issues at work, and expressed varying degrees of knowledge and experience. The sensitive and contentious nature of debates including religious sensitivities and freedom of speech which subsequently appeared on the online ESOL Research list highlighted an urgent and widespread need for theoretical and practical work.
