York City FC to Lead pride Parade

York City Football Club has join forces with York Pride in a hope to kick homophobia out of sport in the city’s second pride parade.
The parade is set to take place on 1 June with a march through the city center. Accompanying the march will be a 100m long rainbow flag.
Players from the city’s soccer club and from the professional rugby league team will take part in the march accompanied by the teams’ mascots.
Also in attendance will be former BBC director general Greg Dyke, who will be appointed the new chairman of the Football Association (FA) in July. He says battling homophobia is the top priority of the FA following the Lets Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign.
‘The FA is totally committed to supporting Football v Homophobia [an international initiative opposing homophobia in football], ensuring the game is inclusive and combating discrimination of all types,’ said Dyke.
Julian Rudd of York Pride added: ‘We are thrilled to get the support of York City Knights and York City FC in a groundbreaking and and city-wide stand against intolerance and homophobia in sport.
‘With the backing of the city council and even the city’s rugby league and football teams we are able to say that in 2013 people of all sexualities can participate and succeed in sport – even sports such as football and rugby where this has often been difficult.’
Live acts confirmed for York Pride include X Factor duo Diva Fever, Lady Gaga and Pink tribute acts and drag act Bears Aloud.
York’s first pride parade was held in July 2012. The parade will meet at the York Minster Cathedral at 12pm and commence at 12.15pm.
Entry to the event is free of charge but support wristbands are priced at £5 ($7.60 €5.80).
