Founding Cara-Friend Exhibition
The ‘Founding Cara-Friend’ exhibition preserves the legacy of Cara-Friend, Northern Ireland’s oldest LGBTQIA+ charity. Founded in 1974, eight years before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in NI, Cara-Friend provided a vital lifeline to thousands of individuals.
This exhibition features portraits of Cara-Friend volunteers, including those who founded the charity and steered it through the 70s and 80s, photographed by New York-based artist Timothy O’Connell. Biographies and quotations provide context to the portraits, developed by the team at the Queer NI – Sexuality Before Liberation Project (funded by the AHRC, AH/V008404/1), including social historian Dr. Charlie Lynch, and peace studies scholar/oral historian Dr. Molly Merryman, of Kent State University, US, who also produced a short video of these individuals.
It is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players.
